What To Do When Seniors Aren’t Ready to Make the Move to Your Community

leave a comment »

Hopefully this tip will help you if you are in sales of senior living communities.  When a prospect says they are not ready yet, ask them if they have lived in a senior living community before.  Most will say they have not, and then you ask them how they know they are not ready if they have never lived in a community before.  The best thing to do at that point is to invite them for a trial visit to your community.  Trial visits result a high percentage of move-ins, since many seniors then realize that they are really ready after they experience the lifestyle.

Senior Living Leadership, Part 2

with 2 comments

One of the 8 Key Components of Successful Leaders in Senior Living is Observation

Leaders have significant impact in their communities by being good observers of what is really going on, and by realizing the impact they have on their residents and team members who are observing them.  Observation is a two-way street – observing and being observed!

Only by getting out of the office and practicing what we’ve heard about from other authors about “management by walking around” do you really understand what is going on in the trenches where the services are being provided to your residents.

And as your team and residents observe your leadership behaviors, they form their impressions of you as a leader.

Senior Living Leadership

leave a comment »

I had the opportunity in late May to present a two-hour workshop for the Executive Directors and Corporate Leadership of a client on my perspective on Leadership in Senior Living, drawing on my own personal and corporate experiences in the senior living business for over 25 years, as well as the lessons that we have learned about leadership from Abraham Lincoln and others.

It was a great experience to spend time really thinking about the characteristics of the most successful leaders in our business whom I have observed over the last 25 years, as well as to explain how my family, friends and I were led through my personal “life and death” situation in 2006 and 2007 and how it relates to “personal life” leadership.  In preparation for this workshop, it was also great to learn about the terrific leadership examples of Abraham Lincoln during our country’s most trying internal conflict, the Civil War.

There was much to learn and much to share in preparing and making this workshop presentation.  So many of the leadership experiences translated so well into what is going on in Senior Living today.  And, the positive feedback from the leaders of this organization proved that taking the time to really get into “Leadership in Senior Living” was well worth the time and effort of everyone involved.

So, I share this with you if you are interested in learning more about having such a workshop for your corporate and community leaders, or a shortened version as a key-note address at one of your regional or national meetings.   If so, please feel free to send me an email or give me a call.
